The History of Navy Strength
In the 18th century, gin was an essential ration aboard Royal Navy ships. Stored near gunpowder, it had to be strong enough: if the powder could still ignite after being wet, it meant the gin was at least 57% vol. This is how the term "Navy Strength" was born, a mark of authenticity and power.
