Old Tom Gin finds its origins in 18th century London, a time when gin was both banned... and yet omnipresent. While the authorities tried to curb its consumption, clandestine distillers became more inventive: to make their gin more pleasant, they added sugar or aromatic herbs, giving rise to a smoother and more fragrant gin.
His name? It would come from signs in the shape of a black cat ("Old Tom") that discreetly indicated illegal points of sale. Customers would slip a coin into a slot, and a glass of gin would be discreetly served to them through a tube.
Today, Erika Spirit revisits this historic classic with a French and organic touch. This Old Tom gin follows the same base as the Erika Dry Gin, with a post-distillation maceration of rosemary, tarragon, and Provins rose. It is then delicately sweetened with Dordogne acacia honey.
The result? A gourmet, coppery, and floral gin, with warm and complex notes. It features juniper berries, Sansho pepper, walnut leaves, honey, and flowers picked in Dordogne.
This gin won a silver medal at the 2021 Lyon International Competition and can be enjoyed neat to appreciate its full richness.
